Centenary Francis Markes gained possession of Sandy Lodge Farm on 15th March 1909. Thanks to ideal weather - i.e. rainy he was able to invite the national and golfing press to inspect the course on 9th April 1910. During the visit he announced the 14th May 1910 as the official opening date of the club with an exhibition match to take place between Harry Vardon, (always Markes' hero golfer), James Braid, Charles Johns and the newly appointed club professional James Ferguson. However, due, it is thought, to the death of King Edward V11, the match was postponed to 16th July and it is this date in 2010 which will be celebrated as the Centenary Date.
