In Arena Virtus

Classical Latin ambiguity best describes the Sandy
Lodge Golf Club motto, as its meaning has been interpreted many ways
since the club was founded in 1910. Initially suggested by a founding
Club member, a classics master at nearby Harrow School, he translated
the motto literally as : 'Our virtue lies in our sand.’ Another more
apposite translation is ‘Courage in Combat’, which aptly reflects the
competitive nature of the game. This alternative is indeed appropriate
for Sandy Lodge, as the course tests any player's golf skills in a
variety of ways. Mr. Markes chose the site due to its sandy soil, an
oasis in the ubiquitous London clay. Once part of a coastal beach or
perhaps the estuary of an ancient coastal river, it received extensive
deposits of sand which provide excellent drainage and which help to make
this rolling, links-style golf course playable year-round.
The Sandy Lodge crest is aptly capped
with a sand hill and growing bent grass, both native to the course. The
wavy lines represent the sea that no longer exists here, but which left
its mark on the site centuries ago.
