Board Competitions
The Canny Ryall Victory Cup.
This cup, 15½inches high and designed by J Dudley
Forsyth, was presented to the Club by Mr E Canny Ryall, a member of the
committee, to celebrate the Allies’ victory in the First World War
(1914-1918). The figure in the panelling of the cup symbolises the part
played by golfers in the Army, Navy and air Force all through the war.
The resulting eventual success is symbolised by the winged figure of
Victory that surmounts the lid of the cup. The flags of the chief Allies
are enamelled in colours between the panels.
The Althaus Cup.
Presented in March, 1933, by a
member, Mr F.R. Althaus in memory of his father, Mr. T.F. Althaus, who
was an original member. The family were well known in the City of
London, F.R having been Deputy Chairman of the Stock Exchange.
U.S. Navy Cup.
Presented in June, 1920, by officers of the United States
Navy who enjoyed the hospitality of the Club during the war.
The Founder's Cup.
This large silver urn, which was
originally known as the Old Company Challenge Cup, was purchased in
1930, when the new Sandy Lodge Company was formed. (A similar urn was
purchased for the Ladies' club). Its name was changed to the Founder’s
Cup in 1952 when the name of the previous Founder’s Cup,
which presented, to Club by Mr. J. Francis Markes in 1911, was changed
to the Markes Cup.
