Francis Markes gained possession of Sandy Lodge Farm on 15th March 1909. Thanks to ideal weather - i.e. rainy he was able to invite the national and golfing press to inspect the course on 9th April 1910. During the visit he announced 14th May 1910 as the official opening date of the Club with an exhibition match to take place between Harry Vardon, (always Markes' hero golfer), James Braid, Charles Johns and the newly appointed Club Professional James Ferguson. However, due, it is thought, to the death of King Edward V11, the match was postponed to 16th July and it is this date in 2010 which was celebrated as the Centenary Date.

Centenary Social Events

There were a number of traditional social events based around section and inter club matches during the year.

Golf Week Finale

This provided the finishing touch to our early June week of Golf and was built around the fiercely contested "Wildlife Shield" members golf tournament. The aim was to widen the enjoyment to non-golfers and encourage family groups to join in the celebrations. On 5th June 2010 we had fun games plus other activities culminating in a barbecue, jazz band and a truly spectacular firework display finale!!

The Centenary Dinner And Party

This was the occasion when we marked Sandy Lodge's place in British golf. It was a formal black-tie dinner held in the clubhouse on 16th October 2010 at which guests from other Clubs and the top levels of UK golfing "establishment" shared with members a grand finale to the Club's calendar of social events to acknowledge our past and launch us into our second, equally successful hundred years.
